Flou Softbench Modular Sofa - Seating That Adapts to Its Users
Softbench reinterprets the concept of the modular sofa: not a fixed set of elements, but a living system capable of responding to everyday changes and reshaping the sociability of a space whenever needed.
The Softbench Design
Designed by Massimo Castagna in 2018 for Flou, Softbench stems from a reflection on how people inhabit contemporary spaces - fluid residential environments as well as hospitality settings that require flexibility without sacrificing aesthetic identity. The system consists of basic elements - four seats, one armrest, and six backrests - that can be freely combined to create ever-changing configurations. Its most significant feature is its movable backrests: not anchored to the structure, but precisely weighted to ensure firm, reliable support. They can be moved, oriented, and redistributed. The result is seating that welcomes people of different heights and postures with the same comfort, adapting to conversation, relaxation, and entertaining. Softbench is designed both for a private living room with an informal feel and for contract and hospitality projects seeking contemporary, distinctive design solutions.
