There is something almost meditative about Toru: its form rises from the worktop with a silent, almost sculptural composure. The 18/10 stainless steel blends seamlessly with the thermoplastic resin in a deep, uniform black tone that absorbs the kitchen light instead of reflecting it. In the hands, the juicing cone has the discreet solidity of an object designed to last - and to be admired even when it is not in use. Toru was born from the pencil of Nendo, the studio founded in Tokyo in 2002 by Oki Sato, one of the most celebrated names in international contemporary design. The collaboration with Alessi produced an object that perfectly embodies the philosophy of both: removing the superfluous until the form tells its own function. The name itself - *toru*, "to take" in Japanese - suggests an essential gesture, a direct relationship between hand and machine that is rarely found in the world of appliances.
