There is something meditative about the act of setting down a cup. The KU saucer by Alessi, made of pure white porcelain, transforms that everyday gesture into a moment of aesthetic awareness. The absolute whiteness of the material - smooth and unadorned, able to reflect light with the discretion of one who has nothing to prove - engages with the form in a balance that belongs to the tradition of great European craftsmanship and, at the same time, looks beyond it. The KU collection was designed by Toyo Ito, one of the most influential Japanese architects of the 20th and 21st centuries and winner of the 2013 Pritzker Prize. Ito brings to the design his vision of space as flow, as permeability between indoors and outdoors: even in an apparently simple object like this saucer, one can perceive the search for a form that does not impose its presence but suggests it, with the same lightness with which Ito's architecture passes through matter. The collaboration with Alessi produced a service of rare formal coherence, in which each piece is conceived as part of a unified visual system.
