There is something deliberately playful about the Kaj: a mint-green polyurethane disc that slips onto the wrist with the lightness of a fashion accessory, yet tells time with the quiet seriousness of an object designed down to the last detail. The form is compact, almost tactile in its simplicity - 3.8 centimetres in diameter and just 1.5 cm thick - and the colour is chosen deliberately: that mint green poised between pastel and pop is a precise aesthetic statement, a burst of colour that transforms an everyday instrument into a small manifesto of style. The Kaj was created by Karim Rashid, the Egyptian-Canadian designer who is one of the most recognisable figures in contemporary international design. Rashid is known for bringing the language of the future into present-day objects, with a bold palette and organic forms that challenge conventional geometry. For Alessi, Rashid has designed pieces that have entered the collective imagination of product design; the Kaj belongs to the Alessi collection, in the spring/summer lineup, and carries the seasonal lightness that is a defining feature of the project.
